Honda vs Yamaha Generator: Who’s the Champ?

Honda vs Yamaha Generator
Written by Jamie Masterson

Inverter generators are extremely reliable and can be used for camping, caravanning, and household uses.

Inverter generators are somewhat difficult to choose between. The Yamaha EF2200iS and the Honda EU2200i are two of the most popular models on the market.

Thanks to their incredibly durable, reliable units, Yamaha and Honda are the market leaders in portable inverter generators. Which is the best?

Honda vs Yamaha Generator: General Comparison Factors

Honda and Yamaha both offer 2200W of continuous power and 1800W of maximum power.

You can safely run sensitive electronics like cameras, power tools, and laptops with the inverter technology found in both models.

EF2200iS units can be linked in parallel with the TwinTech Parallel Kit from Yamaha for almost twice the power. You get the same voltage with the frequency of a single unit.

An optional cable allows you to connect two Honda generators together to generate 4400 watts of ultimate power.

Operation and maintenance

There are LED indications for low oil, overload, and run on both generators. There is a night light on the Yamaha so you can see when working in the dark.

You can also check your power usage and fuel level with its digital load meter and fuel gauge. Honda EU2200i does not have these features.

Fuel shutoff switch

A separate fuel shutoff switch is provided on the Yamaha EF2000IS model. While the unit is still running, the user can turn off the fuel line. We recommend that you drain the generator of its remaining fuel before storing.

As a result, petrol can be left in the carburetor without spoiling. There is no such feature on the Honda. As a result, following some time in storage, the Honda might be hard to start as it is equipped with only a single switch for the on/off and fuel tap.

The weigh-in

  • It weighs 25.04kg more than Honda’s 21.10kg when it comes to dry weight. A powerful generator like this has to be at least 25kg in weight to be considered lightweight and compact.
  • As the Yamaha model is designed with three handles, you can easily move it from place to place while sharing the load.

These models aren’t cheap, let’s face it. The advantage of buying from a manufacturer like Honda or Yamaha is their innovation and reliability.

  • $2299 is the Yamaha RRP
  • Honda’s retail price is $2099

With a weight of 650 pounds, Yamaha’s heaviest generator is the diesel-powered EDL11000SE, one of the industry’s smallest but heaviest generators. They weigh an average of 75 pounds when held in their hands, and 100 to 200 pounds when pulled.

Comparing Honda models with similar outputs, it becomes apparent that their weights are similar. Accordingly, the Honda and Yamaha both weigh only two pounds more in the 2000-watt inverter category.

Fuel efficiency

Unleaded petrol is used in both generators. Thanks to a 4.7-liter fuel tank capacity, the Yamaha EF2200iS can run for 10.5 hours at 14% load. Compared to the Honda, its fuel tank holds just 3.6 liters and runs for 8.1 hours under full load. With the Yamaha, you get two hours more run time.

Longer Running Time

Smart Throttle technology on the Yamaha engine (and quieter operation) allows computers to regulate engine RPM based on the load to save fuel and increase efficiency. Furthermore, we like the fuel drain switch that allows Yamaha generators to be drained of fuel before storage.

Eco-Throttle System on the Honda allows its drivers to switch into economy mode.

Noise levels

Yamaha’s operating noise level is between 57-65 decibels, which is much quieter than a normal conversation. The Honda is rated LwA 90dB(A), which is said to be quiet enough.

Extra features

There is a handy boost feature on the Yamaha that you can use to gain additional power if needed. With Yamaha generators, you can also reset them when you overload them, eliminating the need to restart them.

Besides the impressive 4-year limited warranty, both Yamaha and Honda generators come with extensive parts and service networks.

Honda vs Yamaha generator: Secondary comparison factors

The exhaust from generators can be a concern for the environment, as a lot of it is released into the atmosphere. If EPA and CARB compliance is important to you, both Yamaha and Honda are compliant.

Tank Size

With a 4.4 Litre tank, the Yamaha EF2000iS has an edge over the Honda, which has a 3.6 Litre tank. Yamaha’s engine has a higher rated engine, but Honda’s is smaller (i.e. 1/4 load).  The engine runs up to 15 hours on a single tank of fuel versus 10.5 hours on the Yamaha.

Both units come with a 120v household outlet and a 12v DC outlet.

Yamaha EF2200is vs Honda EU2200i: Product comparison

Fuel gauge

Honda EU2200i fuel gauge measures the amount of power generated by the engine. The Yamaha EF2200is fuel gauge, on the other hand, is designed to measure the amount of fuel left in a tank and it’s not designed to generate power.

The Yamaha EF2200is has an advantage over Honda EU2200i because it’s more precise and accurate at measuring how much fuel is left in a tank.

Easy service cover

The Yamaha EF2200i has an easy service cover to remove and replace. The Honda EU2200i has a service cover that is difficult to remove and replace.

RV outlet

Yamaha EF2200is provides a better RV outlet as compared to Honda EU2200i.

In Yamaha EF2200is, the RV outlet is located in the rear of the machine. This is a significant improvement over Honda EU2200i where the RV outlet is located on top of the machine.

The quality of RV outlets determines how much power can be used for your needs and how long your battery will last.

Output indicator

The Yamaha EF2200i has a better output indicator than the Honda EU2200i.

This allows you to know when the generator is at its peak output, which is important for optimal performance. The Honda EU2200i does not have this feature.

Economy switch

Honda EU2200i is more powerful than Yamaha EF2200is, but it has some problems with the fuel tank.

The Better Economy switch in Yamaha EF2200is is a great improvement over the Honda EU2200i. It is not only cheaper to buy and maintain, but it also offers better fuel efficiency.

Doesn’t stall out

One of the biggest advantages of the Yamaha EF2200is is that it doesn’t stall out as compared to the Honda EU2200i. This makes it easier to use when you have to run multiple appliances simultaneously on your property without any interruptions or delays.

Fuel draining valve

The Yamaha EF2200is has a fuel draining valve that helps in preventing fuel overflow during refueling. This is better than the Honda EU2200i as it prevents the spilling of fuel while refueling.

What’s more, the Yamaha EF2200is has a fuel draining valve that is easy to open and is made of metal. The Honda EU2200i does not have one, which makes it more difficult to drain out the fuel.

Less price

The price of Honda EU2200i is $1,597.15 while that of Yamaha EF2200is is $1,499.

The Yamaha EF2200is is a powerful and affordable portable generator that provides users with the power they need to maintain their appliances during power outages.
