Top 10 Best RV Portable Generators Reviewed

01 DuroMax XP10000EH Dual Fuel Portable Generator (For Heavy Use)

DuroMax XP10000EH Dual Fuel Portable Generator

Why It Stands Out to Us

Our first product of the day is the DuroMax XP10000EH. Right from the name, you can probably tell why we love this one. It has a whopping 10000 watts of power and can also run two different fuels. That’s versatility at its finest.

Don’t get too intimidated with all the power though. It has a cool eco mode that will limit the power and let you run it economically. This feature will come in handy when you don’t need 100% of the oomph.

Our Experience with the DuroMax XP10000EH Dual Fuel Portable Generator

  • Let’s start with that massive power, then. With 10,000 watts, we didn’t feel this one lacked oomph at all. It was able to run all the appliances with ease. So, if you have a pretty big RV with lots of appliances, this should be the perfect generator for that.
  • Not only did it run the appliances, but the ability to use both propane and gasoline gave us some awesome flexibility as well. We didn’t need to think about which fuel we had to use. When we were on the road, we didn’t have to worry about which fuel is supported. And let us tell you that’s a great feeling.
  • All that power doesn’t mean it can’t be toned down. The idle control features allowed us to run it at low RPMs when we didn’t need 100% of the power. You can also choose to operate it at both 240V and 120V.
  • The dual-voltage selector also makes it ideal for RV usage. We were able to run this beast at 120V and 240V simultaneously. It can even go at full power at That’s pretty cool.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Wheels aren’t that special. They are clunky and don’t feel that smooth.

Who Is It Great for

If you’re looking for the utmost power and versatility for heavy-duty use, get this one. You won’t regret it.

What Could Be Improved and Why

  • Better wheels with a smoother operation should be included in future revisions.

Our Recommendations

  • If you get this, just remember that the wheels aren’t that smooth.

  • Fuel: Propane and Gasoline
  • Wheels: Yes
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Weight: 220 LBS

Pros

02 Champion Power Equipment 100519 Inverter (Top Inverter Unit)

Champion Power Equipment 100519 Inverter

Why It Stands Out to Us

The thing that stood out to us with this one is the quiet operation and its smart features like voltage monitors and economy mode. But the quiet operation has to be the best thing about it. This one is hands down a top-notch unit.

Our Experience with the Champion Power Equipment 100519

  • This one might not be as powerful as the previous one, but it still held up pretty well for us. The 6250 watts came in handy in day-to-day usage, and we didn’t feel like we needed more power. Of course, you need to be realistic with the usage as well. You can’t expect this one to power tons of appliances.
  • As we mentioned, the quiet operation is one of the best things about it. Noise levels were around only 69 dB during testing. This is great news for those who want a quiet generator for camping trips, especially in RV clubs where everyone is sleeping at night. You don’t want to disturb them with a loud generator.
  • And it ran long too. This generator was averaging around 12 hours. However, we tested it with gasoline. So, that’s something you need to keep in mind. Regardless of the fuel, this runtime is impressive and should be enough for even hardcore RV enthusiasts.
  • The package came full-featured as well. This was another thing we were glad to see during testing. In the box, we got charging cables, inverter, oil funnel, USB adapter, and also a wheel kit. Right out of the box, we were set for business.

What We Didn’t Like

  • Doesn’t have high wattage — so, it might not be suitable for heavy-duty use.

Who Is It Great for?

Those who are looking for a quiet yet capable unit for their RVs will love this one from Champion Power.

What Could Be Improved and Why

  • Having an option with higher wattage with the same low noise levels would be great.

Specifications

  • Brand: Champion Power

  • Fuel: Gasoline
  • Wheels: Yes
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Weight: 121 LBS

Pros

  • Low noise

03 DuroMax XP12000E Portable Electric Generator (Top Gas Unit)

DuroMax XP12000E Portable Electric Generator

Why It Stands Out to Us

If you thought the previous DuroMax generator was powerful, take a look at this one. With 12000 watts of power, this stood out to us for its sheer ability to power our RV’s appliances with ease.  The low oil shut-off is something we liked as well.

Our Experience with the DuroMax XP12000E Generator

  • The starting watt 12000 while the running is 9500. This was more than enough during testing to keep our appliances running. We didn’t feel like we had to get another backup generator. This is great news for those who just want a single generator to power everything in their RVs.
  • One of the coolest features during testing was the low oil shut-off feature. Whenever it detected that oil levels were low, it automatically shut itself off. We are sure this will help increase its lifespan.

Plus, it was a very convenient feature to have during testing. We didn’t need to check what the oil levels were constantly.

  • And when it’s not being used at 100% power, the idling options helped us save some fuel and reduced noise too! An eco mode is a great thing to see. Saving fuel also means saving money.
  • This one also can run at both 120V and 240V. DuroMax’s MX2 Technology really shines here. We loved that we were able to run this thing at full throttle at a mere 120V like the other one.

What We Didn’t Like

  • It only runs on gasoline, and you don’t have any other fuel choices.

Who Is It Great for

  • RV lovers who aren’t worried about space and want a powerful gas-powered generator are perfect for this one.

What Could Be Improved and Why

  • More versatility when it comes to what kind of fuel can be used will be an awesome improvement.

Our Recommendations

  • If you want absolute power get this one but remember you will be stuck using only gasoline. But before you pull the trigger, make sure that your users need such a beefy generator. Otherwise, you might be just wasting your money.

Our Experience with the BLUETTI Portable Power Station AC200P

  • The power output of this one was enough for us during testing. It powered all our appliances with ease. Although it still is 2000 watts. There are some inherent limitations there, but for a solar-powered generator, it did a great job.
  • From the name, you can probably tell that this is a solar-powered one. That came in handy when we were out and about testing it. It produces clean energy and is, of course, better for the environment. Charging it was a complete breeze too!
  • Display options like Its ability to show real-time voltage, temperature, and charging status were a nice touch, making it convenient to use. We always know important metrics about the generator while it was in use. The indicators do really take away the guesswork from it.
  • A super cool thing with this one is it was able to power 17 devices at once. Yes, you read that right, 17! That meant no matter how many electronic devices you have, it will power them all. Well, given they don’t go over 17.
  • The battery included is also top-notch! The LifePo technology makes it resilient and helped perform like a champ. The cycle is rated for 3500+, and given how good it has been working for us, we don’t doubt that number one bit.
  • Package contents were also full-featured. That was a nice thing to see with such a high-end generator.

What We Didn’t Like

  • There aren’t any wheels on this generator which makes it a bit difficult to move it.

06 Westinghouse WGen9500DF Dual Fuel Portable Generator (Best for Propane)

Why It Stands Out to Us

A powerful engine and smart low oil shut-off features were enough to impress us. This propane-powered generator has it all. And the watts are high too! On top of all that it can run on gasoline as well. But using propane as the fuel is where it shines.

Our Experience with the Westinghouse WGen9500DF

  • The 8500 running watts were enough to power all our daily needs during testing. It managed to stay consistent. Not only that, its peak wattage can go up to 11200 watts on propane. So, even if you can run it on gasoline, you may get reduced performance.
  • Although this is the best choice for propane, it also runs on gasoline. This gave us a bit of flexibility when we were on the road. There might be times when you don’t have a certain type of fuel. Those are the scenarios where a dual fuel generator will come in handy.
  • It comes with a lot of things in the package, which was a nice touch. We got a smart key fob, oil funnel, a tool kit, and more. All those things together, plus the low oil auto shut-off features, made this one a joy to use for us. All these together increase the overall value of the package.

Dual fuel options and a convenient electric start already seemed like features that will make our life easy using it. But this one stood out to us for more than that. Its cool smart monitoring features were something we liked as well.

Our Experience with the Champion Power Equipment 76533

  • One of the best things about this generator has to be the electric start. Starting it was a piece of cake every time. You don’t have to waste any elbow grease starting it. An electric start also came in handy when we didn’t want to deal with hard mechanical start-ups.
  • Then there is the option to run this thing on both propane and gasoline. This gave us choices when on the road and meant we were never stuck with only one option. This is something we are sure you will love too when on road trips.

But we were quite impressed with the design and was a nice addition to the overall list of good features it has.

  • Don’t think that Champion forgot about safety here. Oh no, they didn’t. There are built in surge protectors that makes it one of the safer generators you can buy. Things like these are the main benefits of buying a generator from a reputable brand name.

  • There is a quick touch panel with easy access to all the controls in one place, which is another thing that adds to the overall convenience of using this generator.
  • 5 hours of runtime (on gasoline) wasn’t too shabby either. While it doesn’t come near some of the top ones we reviewed in the runtime department, it still held up pretty well for us.

Best RV Portable Generator: Buying Guide

RV Portable Generator Buying Guide

Power Output/Watt (Starting + Running)

Power output is the most important consideration when it comes to buying a portable RV generator. You will most likely be using the generator to power all the appliances in the RV.

So, getting one that can do that is, of course, important. Check to see what kind of power you need before you pull the trigger. The higher the wattage, the better, but don’t pay for the power you don’t need also.

Otherwise, you will just waste money. That being said, it’s always better to have a little extra power than to come short.

Fuel Type

  • Gasoline

These are one of the most common generators you can find. Even though gasoline generators are common, they aren’t that cheap. There is some good news, though. A lot of generators will let you use both propane or gasoline as fuel. This brings us to our next fuel type.

  • Propane

One of the biggest benefits of propane is it can run your generator for longer on a single tank. That means you don’t need to refill it as frequently, and it’s also becoming more and more popular.

  • Diesel

This fuel burns much cleaner compared to others. But there are disadvantages as well. It creates a lot of noise and smell to go along with it. Diesel generators aren’t that common, but you do get more out of a single tank.

  • Solar

Lastly, we have solar. Solar is solar; what else can we say about it? It uses the Sun’s natural energy to charge and can take a while to reach full capacity. If you want a generator that has a very low environmental impact, you can go for a solar-powered generator. But keep in mind that charging can be a hassle.

Fuel Tank Size

The fuel tank size is important to think about as well. The larger the tank, the less frequently you need to refill it. That will make things much easier.

Fuel Economy

If your generator is a gas-guzzling machine, you will run out of fuel in a blink of an eye. That’s why good fuel economy is important. It means your generator can run efficiently, and it will be cheaper in the long run as well.

Make sure to check out for good fuel economy to get the most out of each tank of fuel you fill.

Parallel Capability

This is one of those features that you don’t realize you need until you experience it. This feature allows you to hook up your generator to another one to increase its power output effectively.

We are sure you can already see how helpful this can be. If you have a very large RV and need tons of power, generators with parallel capability will come in handy. Air conditioning units are one the biggest power draws in RVs. You can go for ones that have this feature if you want the most reliable power output.

Noise Output

A loud generator will get annoying fast. Constant noises aren’t healthy for your ears either. So, getting one with decent noise levels and being quiet will also be something you will appreciate. We have a couple of generators in this list that has very acceptable dB levels.

Price

Of course, there is a price to think of. The range can be anywhere between $100 to $500! So, no matter what your budget is, you should be able to find one that fits within it. Just make sure it has all the useful features you would need, and don’t waste money on gimmicks.

Warranty

You also can’t forget about the warranty. A good warranty policy gives you peace of mind that someone will have your back if something unfortunate happens.

Safety Considerations to Run a Generator While Sleeping in the RV

Running the generator the whole night while you’re sleeping can be dangerous, not to mention it’s also bad etiquette if you’re in a shared campsite.

  • The Sound and Heat

You need to think of the noise pollution and also if your generator overheats it can be a fire hazard as well.

  • Carbon Monoxide

CO (carbon monoxide) is poisonous and can be inhaled if the generator runs for long hours. It’s odorless and also tasteless. But if you can smell the gas, be sure that you’re also inhaling carbon monoxide.

The best way to tackle this and be safe is to get a detector. It will immediately alert you when there is a leak and will keep you safe.
